Understanding Solar Radiation Modification: A Workshop Series for Africa Outcomes Report

In August 2024, the Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering (DSG) and The African Climate Foundation (ACF) hosted two virtual workshops aimed at enhancing the understanding of Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) science and governance among Africa’s scientific, civil society, and policymaking communities. To culminate the workshop series, an in-person workshop was held in Cape Town on October 30, 2024. This pilot set of activities offered in-depth discussions on ethical, governance, and climate justice aspects of SRM, relevant for African and South African civil society, and helped link various groups with local experts to enhance learning.

The workshop series aimed to take initial steps towards building nuanced perspectives on SRM in the African Continent that can guide decision-making. While the global community will ultimately have to contend with decision-making on the use or non-use of SRM technologies, dedicated regional, national and local-level engagements remain crucial to developing an ecosystem that is inclusive, transparent, and accountable as the field rapidly evolves.

This report outlines the motivations of these workshops and their development, perceptions of presenters and participants, and lessons learned for future engagement and capacity building work.
