Science of SRM: Research Implications for Pakistan

July 30 @ 15:00 16:30 Pakistan

Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) is a premier think tank of Pakistan which continues to support federal, provincial, and local governments, private sector, and non-governmental initiatives for fostering sustainable development in the country. The Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering is leading the global efforts towards just and inclusive deliberation about research and potential use of solar geoengineering. Collectively, the partner organizations are working to increase the knowledge on Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) among Pakistani scientific, civil society and policymaking communities.

Much of the narrative on SRM is currently being built in the Global North, where the majority of research on this subject is housed. For a suite of technologies that have global impacts, particularly on climate vulnerable communities, it is imperative to enhance the capacity of the Global South to effectively engage with SRM research and governance processes on various platforms. For Pakistani stakeholders in academia, civil society and policy making, recognizing the changing dimensions of global power under an SRM world, as compared to a warmer world, are crucial for understanding its many security elements (national, regional/geopolitical, water, food, economic, etc), and implementing strategies and policies for long-term prosperity. It is within this context that the partner organizations have initiated a webinar series, to introduce both the science and governance aspects of SRM to a Pakistani audience.
